The Le Klint Story

In 1943, the Tage Klint family turned a hobby into a business and the company has remained relevant by combining timeless shades with new shapes and materials.

Le Klint still uses classic craftsmanship to produce its shades. The talented ‘folding girls’ still form the classic shades with impeccable precision.

The architect PV Jensen-Klint was the man behind the first cross-pleated lampshade.
He had designed a petroleum lamp in stoneware but lacked a shade. For this purpose, he invented the cross-pleated lampshade that was first put into production 40 years later.

His son, Tage Klint, was the man behind the first lamp collar, which he added to the original shades—an important detail that remains a part of the classic design to this day. On top of this, he designed a range of lamps in the Le Klint collection. Ten years later, his son, Jan Klint, took over. Jan was a visionary businessman who set up the fund that has been supporting Le Klint since 1972. He did this to ensure that his employees, designers, and architects would always be supported.

The third son—Kaare Klint—was an architect, craftsman, and designer, not to mention a talented and well-respected man who played a major role in Danish design history.

Le Klint benefited greatly from Kaare’s talent and in 1944, he designed Frugtlygten (Le Klint 101) which remains one of Le Klint’s most popular lamps.

Le Klint has attracted talented, professional and well-respected designers en masse throughout the years and it is, without a doubt, thanks to the combination of these artists and Le Klint’s visionary goals, that the lamps remain both modern and classic to this day.

This is especially reflected in Le Klint’s newest program of Undercover lamps. This collection adds a new style to the Le Klint product range without sacrificing the company’s focus on craftsmanship and aesthetic values.
The Undercover lamps retain the focus on lampshades that the company has been known for throughout its lifetime. The demand for Marimekko inspired products has led to the creation of the Undercover Unikko shades. A new feature introduced by this collection is the option for children to create their own shades with the Tegnekit (Drawing Kit) shades. The shades are designed by Helle Gråsted, Helle Abild, Sabine Bornholdt, and Maja and Kristina Isola.
