Sofie Refer is a renowned Danish light designer who started her first lighting brand, Refer + Staer in Copenhagen in 2003, two years after her international breakthrough in 2001, when she won the ’Good Design Award’ at the Chicago Athenaeum Museum of Architecture and Design for her Mega Bulb lamp – and
Mega Bulb has since gone on to become one of her most popular designs. Various models are currently manufactured by the famous Danish designer brand
&Tradition.
Sofie Refer’s designs are known for being deeply rooted in Scandinavian design tradition and are inspired by Nordic light. Refer considers respect of nature and the ability to see beauty in simplicity the two key values in any design tradition. Furthermore, Refer feels that light is the most essential and powerful aspect of interior design, and she is driven by her passion to come up with new ways of playing with light. To do so, she uses some of the latest technology to create simple, streamlined designs with neat, sensory expressions and an extravagant touch.
In 2017, Sofie Refer founded the Danish brand
Nuura in collaboration with Nadia Lassen and Peter Østerberg with the aim of creating unique, sensory, and aesthetic light sources that reflect the abundance and joy of Nordic nature. The result is a series of exquisite designs fit for any purpose in private and public spaces alike, including the
Miira,
